A Well-Constructed Bra - Your Weekly Report from SewingArtistry

So I'm writing a new resource for the Resource Library.  It's all about sleeves, how to insert them (a couple of different ways) and how to alter them.

But sleeves involve not only the arm, but also the shoulder, and chest and bust.  The sleeve is not only about the sleeve piece itself but how it hangs and what it's hanging from, and that means that if what it hanging from is bad, then the sleeve doesn't get any better and often gets worse.  Problems that are there with the shoulder and bust, aren't going to be solved by the most superior of sleeve insertion techniques.

The very first place I start is with the bust and in particular the bust point.  And a lot of folks think, the bust point is where it is and it is what it is.

Not so my little petunias!!!  You can do some miraculous and magnificent things with the bust that you can only dream of.  We can take some lessons from some pros whose business it is to stay looking the very best they can.

Each one of these gals has a very good supporting bra on.  If they can have it, there's no reason you can't.

And I know I can hear it now - Claire they are soooo uncomfy!!!  Actually no, they aren't when they fit correctly, they are very comfy.  And that may mean that you don't go to the discount section of Walmart and buy a bra off the rack.  It also means that once you find one, it will last a long time, and you will know where to get the next one when the current one wears out.

There are some great places to get well supporting bras, and a great place to start is at a mastectomy center that caters to mastectomy patients. These people are use to fitting irregular and funny shapes, and they can do wonderful jobs.

Other places are to check around and see where other friends are purchasing their bras.  In my local town - believe it or not, there's a gal at the local mall department store of all places, who's very good at fitting bras.

I will also say that these bras are more expensive.  But this is a double-edged sword.  Purchasing a good bra is an initial layout of a lot of $$$, but in the long run it is almost always a good investment because the bra is made better, it lasts way longer and over time is far cheaper than the inexpensive bra.  Additionally, it makes you feel great about yourself every day

Look at your sewing machine,  heck - look at your valuable time - see how much of your valuable time you put into your work?  Look at how much you spend on a sewing machine?  If you're worth an expensive machine and value your time, they you should also value your investment in your appearance - not counting the posture and self-esteem that come from wearing a great bra.  And the back problems you won't have - well, you can thank me later.

Here's a typical example of a great bra on the right and a not-so-good bra on the left.  See how saggy and much older she looks.  Oh, yeah - that's the other benefit.  Having those girls up a little higher (now, not around your neck - at a normal height!),  takes 10 years off your figure - I swear!!!

Which one would you rather be!!!

There is nothing that beats great style – NOTHING! This is most often classic, and yet you can see great style in some pretty dramatic looks, but it’s still classic.  There are a couple of young examples of this great style that I like to go to for […]
