Ms. Muse Calling Again - Your Weekly Report from SewingArtistry

Being as this is one of a sewists busiest times of the year, and being that I'm sure you're working on a whole lot of projects, these are the very activities that call the muse to you.  And so you will want to be listening....she's very quiet at first, and then after you start listening to her she will blather on and on and on and......

So you will want to not only be aware of her voice, but WRITE IT DOWN.  And being a member in good standing of the WID club (write it down, I have a variety of ways of doing that.  I'm a visual person (duh!), but also I have to have some notes around.

Mostly, I use the old-fashioned notebook way of writing stuff.  But I also have the electronic way of writing things down.  I like using Evernote which is an app for your computer (actually it's a web page on your computer) and for your smartphone and tablet.  This means if I'm at the fabric store, teaching at school, or simply want to check my notes, I have them written down.

Of course for pictures, there's Pinterest, which is something sent down from heaven!  And most of my boards are public.  My favorites are patterns.  And you are more than welcomed to check them out here.
Patterns - AAA General (AAA cause it's the first in the alpha listing) - mostly basic and sloper-ish type stuff - really more for me than for public.
Patterns - Activewear - all the stuff I make for hiking and biking

Patterns, Arty Tops
Patterns - Babies - my niece and nephew are having kids!
Patterns - Blocks and slopers - this is really a better board for info on these patterns
Patterns - Blouse/Shirts - these are those basic patterns that I recommend when you want to make your TNT pattern.
Patterns - Bomber Jackets - that was a phase a while ago.
Patterns - Chanel Jacket
Patterns - Classic - dresses and other classics
Patterns - Classic Dresses
Patterns - Coats
Patterns - Cosplay - for my cosplay students
Patterns - Creative Designs - more like designs in fabrics and other design type patterns
Patterns - Favs
Patterns - Jackets
Patterns - Knit Jacket or stretch jacket ideas
Patterns - Knit Pants
Patterns - Knit Polo Top
Patterns - Leather  - mostly moto jackets
Patterns - Lingerie - just because I'm not 40, 50, 60 anymore doesn't mean I can have something fun for nightwear!
Patterns - Long Skirts
Patterns - Pants
Patterns - Stretch Tops - one of my favorite boards
Patterns - Students - most for my classes
Patterns - Tops - mostly woven and some stretch
Patterns - Tunic
Patterns leggings - a little bit of duplication from Stretch pants, but a lot more leggings here

I am always interested in recording ideas as they come to me when I'm creating (that IS the best way to call the muse), but not writing them down is catastrophic, because your memory simply can't remember it all.  And even the shortest or smallest note is all it takes to bring it back.

I use these boards as not only ideas for students, but as an index for me.  They contain my favorite TNT patterns, that I know I want to use, but simply may have forgotten about.  I bought this or that fabric for a top or leggings or tunic or something, and now that i have the time, what pattern was I going to use?  Simply go to my board and there it is.

It's good to keep your board clean and efficient as well as properly named.  I know, it may take a little time, but it makes your board so much more easily to access and view.  Having to go through either a bunch of patterns that you will never use, and those that you have that don't really ring your bell, is even more time-consuming, and eventually it defeats the purpose of your board.

I also use this for some of my more inspirational pictures - like Galliano's Spring 2011 show that he showed the great silhouette that we are all using now -- or some great jacket label embroidery ideas.  The thing is that, I can't possibly remember all the artistic details of all these things, and to try would boggle my brain to the point I would be seriously damaged or it would explode and make a huge mess.  So keeping visual notes is so easy and useful for me. In one glance I can get the whole idea of the garment again when it's a visual picture.

Both Evernote and Pinterest are two different ways of keeping track of your ideas - well those and the old-fashioned notebook.  Use whichever you like, but do use them.  They can be invaluable for your conversations with Ms. Muse!!!

Happy communing with the Muse this creative time of year!
