For You Apple and Rectangle Shapes Out there - Your Weekly Report from Sewing Artistry

So I'm in the middle of teaching the Dress class today and yesterday, but wanted to write this before, so the timing may seem a little confusing since I'm writing this on Wednesday not Friday.  Well, that sounds clear as mud, but hopefully the rest of this will make sense.

The BIG news here is that the Dress is the new look for spring.  You open any reasonable and well-edited fashion site and that's all you'll see.

This is Vogue's best shots backstage from Milan F/W 2020 - where are the pants?  There are none.  Now not any of us are going to wear a lot of this stuff, (OK, maybe any of this stuff), but to me the huge takeaway here is that there are no pants for Fall 2020!  And this is where we sewists can get ahead of the rest of the pack, because taming these looks and noticing what's coming means we are way ahead of the fashion trend.

Another thing here is that you don't have to look crazed, or exaggerated to make this work.  A classic dress in a well-proportioned look for your shape, well-fitted for your size and comfortable for your style, means that it is a great flattering reflection of who you are - not some crazed fashion victim.

The traditional dress is of course the waist and the skirt, and for Hourglass and Pear shapes these are easy to use.  For the Rectangles and the Apples, they can be a little bit more difficult, but not impossible.  And BurdaStyle, who always seems to be either on top of the look or right ahead of it, comes through with a great look.  You can download it on the German site, but if you wait a couple of weeks, it will be available on the UK (in English) site .
Now as you might imagine - I made some changes and discuss them in this video.  Those cuffs are dorky and I don't think they look classic or mature.  And I love the placket, but should be longer and love the darts in this piece, there are more than the tech drawing shows here , and as well there are no pockets and I discuss that in the video.  I also would like to see the waist just a little lower, not much, but a little.  And more than anything it's fun to see how this dress moves and looks.

So for you Apples and Rectangles out there, don't despair - you too can wear dresses!!!

This new year will bring a new look and lots of new things added to the sewingartistry.com to the site.  In the meantime, things will be placed a little different, and if you can't find something that you liked or would like to find, just let me know.  It's easy as pie - you can simply respond to this email and I'll get it.  I get all these emails and I read all of them. so let me know if something seems awry for you or out of place.

We're working on simplifying it and changing it to a more functional and easier place to get around.
If there's something you liked from before and don't see, LMK.
If there's something you've never seen, but would like, LMK.
And of course if there's something that seems haywire or good, LMK!

You all will be the first to know when it's more settled, but for right now we're still moving the furniture around!
