Welcome to the New Year and welcome to a new decade! The New Year is always a great time to not only think about what you want to do this coming year, but also to look back and think about your accomplishments and the serious advances you made during the year.  Yes, you can look at the failures too, because from them you have learned many things.

But it's as important to focus on the advances,  the things you tried and succeeded.  We too often forget these, like they are on a list, and once done and accomplished,  they are checked off and forgotten.  Don't forget these.  They are as important to remember.

With those successes in mind, think about the opportunities the New Year will afford you - to challenge yourself and some of the successes you would like to have.  Keep these positive, and yes, challenging yourself is scary, because this involves change.  .

It was Einstein who said:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results."

In addition to insanity, I would add denial, desperation, depression, dormancy and doubt.  Gee, that sounds pretty awful doesn't it.  But accepting and realizing change is a part of our lives, and avoiding it can put us in such a tiny little box within which to operate that our lives become so restricted, that even very simple divergence from that box can seem like a monumental task.

Simply varying a little bit at a time can make change much more palatable so that we can begin to realize that change ain't the horrid enemy that we thought it was.  And it can actually become a refreshing and meaningful part of our lives.

That change may simply mean that we can no long pretend or even hope to be a certain size or that we can't wear that beloved garment that we looked so good in 10 years ago.  Realizing that we've change in our bodies and minds is all apart of the human experience.

One of my favorite sayings is:

There are many other great quotes on change like:
"To improve is to change;  to be perfect is to chanage often."
    ~Winston Churchill

"One day or day one -  you decide."
    ~Unknown

Change is not only a part of our lives, but it's also a vital part that when it is denied, we don't operate as well as we should.  Accepting and embracing the change, even if it's a little at a time, can bring about such remarkable results in not only what we can accomplish but in how we see our environment.

I recently took the bull by the horns and made a huge change, and as a result have taken on a whole new way to look at what I'm doing with my life.  Not only has it re-energized me, but I have become way more focused and can hone in on what I really want to accomplish.

This is the sort of result that comes from our embracing and looking at change in completely different terms.

The start of a new decade is a great time to come to the change that is at your door.  I don't believe in change for change's sake, but I do believe in well-thought-out, and considered change which can be smart, and as Churchill says - maybe even perfect!
