What's Old Is New Again, Your Weekly Report from SewingArtistry

January 27, 2017

There were lots of trends I saw in New York last week, and one of them was a refit of the 80's - not those HUGE shoulder pads...this is a refit of the 80's.  When we come back to a trend of the past it's always a new look.

When my generation did shoulder pads, we were inspired by those from the 40's

We thought these were the absolute end....but took it a different way.
The difference was the focus on the waist....the shoulder pad was to make the waist smaller and much more hourglass.  The shoulder pads of the 40's weren't that focused on the waist.

The pants of the 1920's were horrifically daring.

But then so was the Le Smoking look from Yves St. Laurent who was accused of dressing women like men but the look led to the power suit era for women (and from a person point,I couldn't see the fuss cause I loved it at the time)

The truth is that when we come back to these styles, they are always reconfigured and reworked just enough that they are new.

The glitzy glamour of the 1920's in the 2013 The Great Gatsby movie were elegantly and opulently beaded and detailed with lots of ornamentation.
But when revisited in the 80's, the look was just as opulent, but completely different.
In it's own way this was just as opulent as the 20's, but you wouldn't ever mistake them for the same style at all.

The interesting thing is that all of these styles are making a comeback of sorts in today's fashion. The looser fuller leg in pans, the shoulder pad and the glitzier look.  They are all coming into vogue again.

It's that they will be in a different way that how we saw it last.  So get your beads, shoulder pads (no they don't have to be the ones for the defensive line in football), and the looser pant leg.  And watch how these will peak into today's fashion.

I'll be watching!!!

Wondering What Design U is All About?

Design U is designed for sewists who want to learn more about making their garments have a more professional look, but also a more flattering look.  Sewing is great, but it's also about fashion.  No matter what stage in life you are in, looking good should always be a priority, and looking your best not only makes you feel better, it puts your best foot forward.  After dressing my clients in all shapes, sizes and styles for over 30 years, I'm turning that knowledge over to my students so you can also benefit from this knowledge.  Subscribing to my newsletter not only gives you a wealth of information, but ideas and excitement about the creative process.  This is about you looking better, without having to hear that you're not the right size or you can't be fit, or you shouldn't expect to feel comfortable in your clothes.

Because you know what?.....you should expect all those things -

1. looking good - no matter what size,
2. getting excited about your clothes and making clothes for yourself and
3. being comfortable in your clothes.  I've had them for the 40 years I've been sewing, and that's the knowledge, inspiration and joy I want to pass onto you!

Here's a great newly updated video I've put together to give you a behind-the-scenes peek at our exclusive Design U program and how I use regularly shaped models to make clothes that fit and look attractive on these models... watch this video and see exactly the kind of great content and bonuses you'll have access to when you invest in your learning and enhance your wardrobe!
