Your Weekly Report from SewingArtistry - Stretch, Jersey, Knit and BallPoint Needles - What's What?

This month's topic in the newsletter is knits - so I have "knits on the brain".

One of the things I find about knits - especially 100% cotton or any other natural fiber is how comfy they are.  It's 85° today and I'm cool as a cucumber in my knit pants and top, and very comfortable.

Another thing I find really fascinating is how a dang needle can make so much difference.  One of the major points on your "knit checklist" should be needles and to make sure you the right kind.  Ballpoint needles will penetrate the fabric without catching on the yarns or piercing the yarns.  The whole needle bobbin process of making a stitch gets all fouled up when the needle is piercing the knit/stretch fabric.

Additionally if the ballpoint needle skips, use a stretch needle.  The stretch needle tip is slightly less rounded  - cleaner in and out.  Why not start with a stretch?  Because the ballpoint needle is really a better (and easier needle) for the machine to make stitches.

Stretch and Ballpoint needles come in various sizes and styles.  The single is great for your stretch stitch on your machine and the twin or double is great for that topstitch/overlock look.  I prefer using the 2,5 width rather than the 4,0 width, but both come in the stretch point models.  As far as the sizes for your single needle, go with the fabric - the finer the fabric, the finer the needle and the heavier the fabric the heavier the needle.

Hope that helps clear up the knit/stretch/jersey needle question and most of all don't even think of doing knits without that jersey/knit/stretch or ballpoint needle.  It will make your project go together like a dream.

One note:  we are doing some spring cleaning on the site, so things may look a little hinky for a week or two while we back up and then reload everything, but I'm told that it will make things much smoother.  One of the problems it will solve is if you are getting that pesky, "Warning, you have reached a dangerous site," and then proceeds to give you the link that's something weird with a ".ru" on the end.  ".ru" means Russia BTW.  Anyway, the spring cleaning will hopefully eradicate that message - thank heavens.  So bear with us while we clean things up and they will be back to normal soon!

Thanks!
