So now we head into the Christmas season and suddenly everything has a deadline.  It's either getting things ready for you for an event or else getting ready for gifts to be mailed or put under the tree.  Either way this time of year brings a lot of joy, ideas and your ability to get more done than you thought you could.

KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOK HANDY
The very first thing to remember is to keep that notepad close by.  Your creativity juices will be flowing like Niagara Waterfalls and you will have gobs of ideas while you're creating. Write those puppies down and have them ready to refer to.  Some of them may lose their luster after the holidays or upon further thought, some may cause you to think about solutions and future creative events in a different way, and some will be so outstanding you can't wait to dig into them in the calm of the new year - and the new year is very calm.

PROCESS OF SOLVING PROBLEMS IS ARTISTIC!
The other is to remember about the process of solving problems.  We are artists.  Yeah, I know you all don't think you are cause you don't act like some turned-on, tunned-in, dropped-out artist (if Timothy Leary isn't rolling in his grave).  But not all artists are that way.  As a matter of fact when you look at a lot of artists today, they are totally committed to their work but they are also extremely cognizant of what they are doing and how to go about doing it.  In my mind, they are more in control of their lives, work and careers than at any other time in history.

For example, John Galliano, who lived on drugs while creating his masterpieces at Dior (above), is now clear-headed, sober and very clear about what he wants to do and what he wants to create (below). He shows on social media - Facebook, Instagram directly to his customers so he doesn't really put on a fashion show.  He doesn't have to put up with the corporate pressure and deal with all the business types.  He sells directly to the customer.  He has a more realistic vision of his customer so his clothing is not as fantastical, but more practical.

And there's a lot here for inspiration - look at the buttons as purely ornamental, and the jacket made out of cotton or wool gauze, but made with tailored techniques.

The takeaway here is that even professional designers like Zac Posen John Galliano, Jason Wu are working differently than the old-style corporate high end clothing design house.  They are working more with the clients directly.  This is high-performance problem solving that suddenly gets designers in a realm where they are dealing with the folks buying the clothes and have much more valuable information.

That is the sort of problem solving that artists do regularly.  Obviously we aren't designing for the elite of the world, but these new designers aren't either and neither do they want to.  We are working on our own set of problems that come with creating.

Problem solving our artistic dilemma's can take on all sorts of patterns and traits. The most important thing to remember, is that you know more than you think you do.   Sometimes discussing it with a friend or a mentor is all you need.  I'm constantly astonished when I get a request for "help"  how many times students are just a smidgen close to solving the problem but for some reason are reluctant to taking that next step for fear they will mess up everything.

From someone who's had to do that to earn a living, I can tell you taking that next step gives you a ton of information.  Sometimes, it's a bad step, no matter, remove it, take it and out do it again - yes, it takes time, but you will never be sorry you took the time to take it out and do it again.  More often than not it IS the right answer, and boom you're off and running.

It's important to remember here too that is not one right way to do something.  As a matter of fact there are maybe even 15 right ways to solving a problem, and the one you use is the one that works for you.  The answer might be another solution for someone else.  It's what works for you and how you like it that works the best.

Some of us like high waistbands.  Some of us like small waistbands.  Some of us like tight waistbands.  Some of us like looser waistbands.  Some of us like no waistbands.  None of those is right or wrong.  What is right for you is what YOU like and what feels good on YOUR body and flatters YOUR figure.

TIME IS OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE
Even though we try and get a lot done before the holidays, it's important to remember that what doesn't get done, probably won't be noticed.  It's important to have goals and especially those that involve giving to your family, friends and loved ones.  But they shouldn't overshadow your holiday spirit.

Don't overload yourself, and even thought there might be a couple of things that you try new, don't take on a huge project that's entirely new so that you're spending all your time fretting instead of glowing in creative spirit that really should possess this time!

NOTE:  Some email clients, software and web sites, do not allow pictures because they can contain nasty worms and viruses - ICK!  So they will by default block you from seeing the pictures. This is a security measure from your email.  I can't change that cause that means I would have to get inside your computer and mess with  your security which you don't want!  So you can do two things:  1.) you can disable your image blocker and that will depend upon your software.  You can Google it to see how to do that for your specific email.  2.)  You can view it in your browser which is equipped to handle the nasties that might be in pictures.  To do that you can click here to enjoy the full email with pictures!!
