It's important to remember that while you're doing all this excruciating fitting on your core pattern, that the fitting information that you are storing in the pattern, is something that you will use again and again. That's why it's not a loss of time or by any means a waste of time. If anything it's one of the most time-saving actions you can take.
It may take a bit of an adjustment to get used to the fact that when you want a new pair of pants or a new top, that you won't have a lot of fitting issues, but then after a few tries, you'll get used to it, and it's a nice set of circumstances to get used to.
The next issue you'll have is the variations. How many?... what kind? ...where do I get inspiration? ...how much can I vary? ...what to do when the inspirations stop? And those are the normal, everyday questions that every artist ask, so get overwhelmed by them.
The really best thing you can do is always be ready to collect photos while you're still working on your pattern. I'm constantly collecting photos for inspiration. That will never stop and you will never stop gleaning information for ideas and thoughts on what you can do to vary your core pattern.
The real truth here is that there's not too many things you can do to vary pants or skirt or bottoms, but there are so many things you can do to vary your woven and knit core patterns. Here is just a sampling of what I've done with my knit pattern.

Even though the far right above, looks a lot like the far left below, look at the necklines, and I wanted to do another variation on the neckline and had the fabric to do it, so why not.

The far right here is a whole other idea in a "top" variation, where the top becomes a jacket.
What happens here and what we forget, is the very act of sewing these variations brings more ideas on variations. That's why it's real handy to have a note pad or sketch pad close while you're creating anything! You want to write it down. Once it leaves your brain, it's gone, Then the forgotten idea brings on that voice of "Gee, I wish I could remember that idea. It was probably the best idea I've ever had.
As a matter of fact it was the most splendid idea that has ever happened on this Earth and I've forgotten it!" Because you see when you forget an idea - it's always more innovative, unique, fulfilling, and of course just what you needed that could ever be...but you've forgotten it. What you will find is those that you've forgotten are way better than the ones you've written down!!!
So write those ideas down - don't let them escape into thin air!
The really best ideas you get are the ones while you are creating your variations. It was the ruffle collar that caused me to think about making my top a "jacket". It was the smaller blocks that caused me to think about whole sections being at angles.

Today I'm thinking about a wonderful yummy shawl collar that would frame my face, but close in center front, but the collar would be very high, but roll down really well, and it would enfold me, but not be in the way - yeah, I know, sounds impossible, but these impossible thoughts and feelings about clothes lead us to really magnificient ideas.

I've just ordered some yummy fleece (on sale no less) from Marcy Tilton who I have always known to have very fine, rich fabrics, so when I saw this, I knew it wasn't going to be anything flimsy. I haven't received it yet, but it's calling to me to be that longer jacket/coat in that collar that envelopes me if for no other reason that to make me feel special (well, and it will
be warm too), but this will be an emotionally satisfying coat to wear as well as a warm one.
That's the kind of joy that we can bring to clothing that consumers have no idea is even available, much less possible. We sewist can do this for ourselves making our clothing as much a reflection of us as it is a total blessing to wear. Seriously - how lucky are we or what!
